Three things I learned yesterday. When hiking in Scotland, always bring gloves, long pants and a raincoat. It was a lovely few hours in the hills. Reminded me of the ridge line up towards Konya Peak in the Chugach. But I can't say the wind was reminiscent of anything. maybe because I wore thin shorts- but I was so cold! The day worked out surprisingly well, as Kyle from Warmshowers met Antony and me at the end of the hike, fetched my gear at Ant's flat, took me to collect my bike at the shop, and transported me to a lovely campsite in Fife. The bike was in the shop because of a bent rotor and an untrue wheel- thanks to the airline transport. It was the third shop that helped me out. The first one said 2 weeks. The second was 2 days. But Bike Trax was fantastic. From the first person to greet me in the door, to the mechanic who didn't charge a pence. So now the bike is parked across from this vegetarian cafe/organic farm, and hopefully my thousands of dollars of gear is still drying, unattended, in the wind and occasional burst of sun. I haven't ridden a meter, but it has been an excellent shakedown. Figuring out life in my newest tent- I even had to youtube the proper setup. I survived the 50 mile an hour winds and rains, and figured out how to have a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and yoga studio all in the space of less than 30 square feet. The older I get, the smaller I want to live.
TIPS. Ongoing Train travel so far only works if you prebook where you're going and when, if you want to bring a cycle. Only 2 bikes per carriage, and booking opens 12 weeks in advance. Doesn't work for me
